Pictures - Bacalar (with lagoon)
In the precolumbian period Bacalar was a Mayan Settlement. In 1543 the town was taken over by Melchor Pacheco, who created a Spanish settlement there. However, in practice Bacalar was either uninhabited or in the hands of English pirates for most of the colonial period. In 1729, the Spanish colonial authorities built a fort and the population began to grow.
Today, the main source of revenue is tourism. Visitors come for the fortifications and the nearby Bacalar Lagoon.
