Pictures - Calakmul Reserve (Mayan sites)
Calakmul was one of the largest cities of the Maya during the Classic Period. The remains of the city are in the rainforest of the state of Campeche in the Yucatán Peninsula.
The inhabitants of Calakmul itself called the city ''Kaan''.
The city was discovered by western scientists in 1931, when biology professor Cyrus L. Lundell saw two pyramids from an aircraft. Mayan expert Sylvanus Morley, named the city Calacmul, Yucatec Mayan for ''two adjacent pyramid''.
