The small ecological friendly village of El Remate is situated on the banks of ''Lago Petén Itzá''. The small vilage has just a few houses and hotels and gives visitors the opportunity to see genuine, eco friendly woodcarving by the locals. There are also some nice restaurants there. It''s location near Tikal makes it an ideal stop for those on their way to Tikal.
The lake owes its name to the Itza, a Maya people that traditionally inhabited its shores. The capital of those people, Tayasal (currently named Flores, a city on an island in the lake, and the capitol of the region) was the last Maya town to be captured by the Spaniards. The capitulation was in1697. There are 27 other Maya cities around the lake.
