San Cristobal (de las Casas) is the center of the Indian culture in Mexico. It is situated at a height of 2100 meters in cool Valley. It lies on the crossroads of several mountain roads of the Chiapas province, near Guatemala. The colorful streets, old churches and town squares give travelers the opportunity to take great pictures. However, the town is not the only attraction. The surrounding nature is simply breathtaking. With small Indian villages it is a great place to travel through. The great Mayan site of Palenque is not far away.
One of these villages is San Juan Chamula. This is an autonomous village; with its own rules, law and even its own prison! The people there live in a very closed community. The main attraction is the church, a micture of Mayan and Christian culture.
